Women lose RM57,000 in Internet, phone scams

MALACCA: Police have warned the public to be wary of Internet scams and dubious phone offers following reports of two women cheated of RM57,000. State police chief SAC 1 Mazlan Mansor said the victims were lured by prizes such as laptop computers and luxury watches by con artists.

“In the first case reported in Alor Gajah on September 15, a 33-year-old female civil servant was cheated by a man she befriended online. “She was coaxed into making four cash deposits into a local bank account in exchange for a laptop and £5,000 (RM31,500). “After depositing RM22,000 into the account, she realised it was a scam and reported to the police,” he said.
In the second case, a 66-year-old woman was cheated of RM35,000 after she deposited the money into a bank account. Mazlan said the victim received a phone call from a local man who claimed she had won a luxury watch worth RM80,000.

The victim was asked to deposit the sum into a bank account to claim her prize. He urged those who received such dubious offers to contact the police at 06-284 2222 or SMS to 012-224 4999 to assist in investigations. - Bernama

My heart breaks

By Datuk Dr Khoo Kah Lin

If you’re not careful with ischaemic heart disease, then be prepared for a heart attack.

ATHEROSCLEROSIS is a condition characterised by a thickening of the endothelium (inner lining of an artery). This causes the space inside the artery to narrow and flow of blood subsequently becomes restricted. The narrowing of the arteries causes ischaemic heart disease, which is the lack of blood supply to the heart muscle (ischaemia).

As atherosclerosis eventually leads to ischaemic heart disease, it is important to know the risk factors. They are divided into two categories. Modifiable risk factors are factors which we can control, such as raised cholesterol, hypertension (high blood pressure), diabetes, and smoking. Non-modifiable risk factors cannot be controlled, and these include advancing age, gender and genetic factors.
